Growing up none of us would have thought that our lives would look like this. Living in Dubai in pre-fabricated suburban community on the edge of a desert. Still, there's something wonderful about this place, largely due to the people that surround us. The school has 10 families in our neighborhood and, as is often the case in international teaching, one's professional colleagues double up as good friends too.
In this case we all crabbed our folding camping chairs and hiked the requisite 10 meters across the street, to settle down to an outdoor evening with friends. Some new. Some not so new anymore. All with children, typically two. We shared conversation, and good food, and laughter and plans and stories of our projected future. The children had the chance to settle down in the garden with a variety of different seating options - from picnic tarpaulins to bean bags - all facing the living room opening where, between the sliding doors our hosts (Matt and Mary) had placed their large screen TV. It brought, for us, back memories of outdoor movies but with a much more cozy, back yard feel.
The coming of night brought with it the end of the movie (Moana) and the making of smores, of course. The kids moved over to the fire where the goodies were consumed faster than they could be made. Life is good, even if you are all 'stuck' for spring break due to a pandemic exanding its reach around the world. We do love our neighbors, though!
