It's always wonderful to have friends come into town. To make things better this time around a planned side trip to Pulau Tioman (off the East coast of penninsular Malaysia) fell through as the plane was unable to land due to gusty winds. In its place, Joe and Trina and Sarah (along with the ever-flexible and layed back Kate) decided to just hang around and make the best of Kuala Lumpur had to offer. So what if this was their third time in town? So what if the original plan was to head to the South China Sea to scuba dive? So what that the luxurious hotel stay was turned - within hours - to a stay at a less-than-spectacular studio in our apartment building?
In the end, this was a vacation of people, not of places. We had multiple trips to Suzie's for their now famous tenderloin steak. We had a wonderful vietnamese dinner with Leanne and Joe (of the Granzow clan from Iowa) and a short, yet positive, stay at the Saujana hotel - along with Scott and Rebecca - where everyone enjoyed the kiddie pool and Irini and Sarah got to roam around on hotel-issued bikes (Irini in the red one with the training wheels and Sarah on the blue on without them) while their dads did their best to keep up with their twists and turns.
Along the way there was a whole bunch of lot of the little things that make friendship a great thing to have. There were chats about plans and lifestyle from the parents and pulling on favorite toys from the little ones. There were tears and rules and proper etiquette and, in general, all the girls did a nice job of passing all the tests set up for them at restaurants and pools and in the playground. Oh, wait! There was also a pre-birthday party for Sarah who turns four soon (with chocolate cake!) and a spontaneous trip to an indoor mall-based kiddie fun park where Irini and Sarah got to follow Rebecca to the merry-go-round.
By the end of the trip a happy Joe, Trina, Sarah and Kate all departed with happy smiles and wishes well given and received. On to other journeys. On to more of life. But for a week of Chinese New Year 2011 (what is it in Chinese years anyway?), we are all together again, sharing moments, giggling at the children, watching them grow and learning along the way. Thanks for coming over!!
